AWE were engaged to provide the road drainage design for an upgrade to 85 km of main roads on the Tiwi Islands. The drainage assessment included the hydrological analysis of a range of different catchment sizes and grades. Catchment extents were difficult to define due to the lack of survey data outside of the proposed road corridor. AWE was able to utilise our GIS data management skills to obtain and modify the most appropriate regional digital elevation data and to inform the general catchment extents.
Drainage infrastructure ranged from small culverts required to transfer local catchment flows across the road through to the design of river crossovers. The low gradients along many sections of the new road alignment presented particular challenges for our drainage design work due to limited conveyance capacity, close proximity to native vegetation and high intensity wet season rainfall.
